| | Description | The FireStudio Mobile is a ten-input, six-output professional recording system that combines two PreSonus XMAX Class A microphone preamplifiers; six line-level, analog input channels; S/PDIF digital input and output; MIDI I/O; and headphone monitoring with separate gain control. The FireStudio Mobile beats any and all competition when it comes to flexibility and input count. You can record a whole band with the FireStudio Mobile. The FireStudio Mobile is bundled with PreSonus Studio One Artist, our groundbreaking music creation program, and over 4 GB of virtual instruments, plug-ins, loops, and samples to get you started making music immediately. Here's a dirty little secret: bus-powered mobile interfaces from other manufacturers deliver much less than the full 48 volts of phantom power that is specified by microphone manufacturers. This means even the finest condenser microphone can't work at optimal internal gain levels, potentially compromising sound quality even before the signal gets to the mic preamp! PreSonus president Jim Odom and his team of engineers went the extra mile and created an 'internal switching power plant' that lets the FireStudio Mobile convert computer bus power into a full 48 volts of phantom power, as well delivering 30 volts to power the superb mic preamps you'll read about next. | |

Good but noisy pre-amp Nov 04, 2009
By Jeffrey D. Doan I have had this one for 3 weeks now, and have been using it for recording since. I'm using it to replace the Mackie Onyx Satellite I have (which doesn't work with Win Vista) in my home studio.
The first thing I "must" notice was the 4 rubber feet at the bottom of the unit keep coming loose. Presonus didn't do a very good job gluing these to the unit. I got tired of sticking them back on and just leave them off, but that's harmless. Maybe my unit is a pre-release unit or something, cuz I got it 1 week before the supposedly release date of 10/22.
The second issue is the noise I got when plugging my condenser directly into the Mic/Inst 1 (and use the 48V provided by the unit). Quite a bit of noise at 1/2 of the knob. I ended up turning the gain on Mic/Inst1 down to minimum, and have my condenser go to a Studio Projects VTB1 pre-amp instead. WIth this setting, I could crank up the VTB1's Input Gain to 40/60, and Output Level to max (12), while leaving the Mobile's Input Gain at just 1 click above the minimum. I now have no noise on the line. So the preamp on the Mobile is very noisy. I'm using an AKG C414B condenser as my primary mic.
There is no issue with the software driver. Presonus is always good at staying on top with their drivers. Installation is easy. The Firewire connection is very reliable.
The bundled StudioOne software seems very easy to use. But I'm not using it as I already have Cubase 4.5. It's probably just a good starting out software, just like Cubase LE.
I would recommend upgrading your PC should you have anything slower than 2.4GHz. When the CPU is too slow, you're gonna get pops and clicks in your recording, and that usually is not the Audio Interface box's fault. In my case, I have an over-clock i7 Quad Core CPU.
Based on my past experience with Presonus interface (I had a Firepod in the past), Presonus stuff are reliable, their preamp is probably a little noisy, though.

Excellent price for value and excellent support Apr 15, 2010

"A. Human Being"
Seemed like a great value proposition compared to other brands. So I got it. They forgot to send the disc for studio one, and Presonus not only (over the weekend) sent me the a a product key for using the download but immediately sent me me a new disc. Their product support has been as good as I have ever seen.
It is very easy to use and sounds great. So far no problems at all. Studio One is easy enough to learn and while I'm not doing anything tricky at this point (importing old 4-tracks) it has plenty of typical "presets" to get you started with typical tasks you can modify to suit your needs while learning.

I am using it and... May 12, 2011
By J. Santos ... it's working quite well. But for months at the beginning it would disconnect itself and I was forced to reboot to make it work (I use it with a IMAC).

Best mobile firewire interface! May 27, 2010
By Andrew Henderson
"Lost in Sound"
I've really enjoyed this unit for times when I'm on the go. I haven't used it in my studio yet, but I've done several live recordings with it, some with a pair of Earthworks SR25 mics and it was CRYSTAL CLEAR! I've been a fan of the XMAX preamps (for budget preamps) for a while, but wasn't convinced they could put a pair in a bus-powered interface AND provide phantom power until I used it. Sounds great! I wouldn't compare it to a real studio setup, but I've used the Apogee Duet as well and I think this one wins in all aspects! (okay, maybe the duet looks cooler)
Wonderful part Dec 19, 2011
By M. Burke Also a longtime user of the preceding product, the FireBox.
This is a great followup product, with gentle enhancements all the way around.
I'm especially fond of the improved virtual-mix software. The old one was adequate - but this one is very nice and usable.
It's hard to say for *sure* but the sound quality feels smoother and gentler on this part than the FireBox. Definitely the preamps feel like they have a better noise floor than before - and the old ones were passable.
The low latency is quite nice, especially given this is an external part. Hand in hand with this is what IMO PreSonus does best: very good drivers. If I ever have a glitch, pop or crash - the last place I look is the PreSonus driver chain because it "just works". Very important stuff. Well done PreSonus.
Bonus points for being able to daisy chain this part.
I miss all the outputs of the FireBox - they turned them into inputs - but let's face it, more inputs are the coveted feature by and large.
