Seems great to me. Jun 22, 2010 Let me start by saying I am a recording virgin, but competent with a computer. I installed this on a low power vista system with all of the stupid power hog features of vista turned off. It was a bear to install, with annoying registration requirements and such. I would recommend immediately updating the drivers and Studio One as soon as you install as this seemed to smooth out all the problems I had getting the recording to work right.
The only problem that didn't fix was getting my M-Audio USB microphone to interface smoothly. I blame M-Audio more than I blame Presonus for the ordeal I had getting that to work, but even now that it is I have to painfully switch devices every time I go from a guitar track to a voice track. The simple solution to this is to just use a standard Mic through the audio box rather than a USB Mic but I don't understand why it has to be such a big deal to use multiple devices at once.
The box itself seems to work great, with no noticible latency. It seems to be ruggedly built. Reproduction sounds accurate to my ear. You can even do realtime effects through the software, something I definitely didn't expect. I wish it had one more XLR input so that I could record guitar, base, and vocals all at once, but I guess you always will want one more input and there are more expensive options if that's what you want. For one person laying down tracks one or two at a time, I can't imagine it working better.
The part I am least qualified to comment on is the actual function of the StudioOne. I can say that is efficient software, not bloated and laggy (which was a relief after trying to get M-Audio's Session software to work). To me it looks very professional and full featured, but I am not really qualified to say that since my recording experience is so limited and there is so much I have yet to figure out with it. I do know that it is better than I expected; much better.
In summary: great hardware, at least decent software that is more difficult than average to install. Overall better than I expected for the price.
Dumbing Down the Market Jun 19, 2010 I tried the PreSonus AudioBox recently and was extremely disappointed with it. I didn't try it with a microphone since I'm usually recording guitars direct, but the preamps are designed to ALWAYS have 20 db of gain being applied even with the input turned all the way down. I looked this up on their official forums, and it is intentional. Because of this, I was never able to get a signal that wouldn't clip when palm muting (even with passive pickups). They don't have any kind of software mixer either, so you have to buy an attenuator pad or find some other workaround.
There's also a knob that you use to blend the mix between the hardware direct monitoring signal and the regular output. Even with the knob turned all the way to the regular output side, you still get some "leak" from the direct signal coming through the monitors. This can cause feedback problems, give you inaccurate monitoring (in my situation, because I'm hearing dry/clean guitar signal at the same time as amp sim VSTs), and is just a general pain in the ass.
And just to add icing on the cake...I also discovered that the output starts digitally clipping with the output knob at only 9 O'CLOCK! Ridiculous.
I think PreSonus had a great product on their hands, and intentionally screwed up the design, as to stray people towards their higher end stuff when they become inevitably disappointed with the AudioBox. Their official forum moderators used the excuse "well, you can't expect those kind of features from an entry-level interface" when people complain about its shortcomings. Really?! I didn't realize the ability to record a USABLE SIGNAL was apparently something that only the big dogs get. What a joke.
I returned it and bought an E-MU 0404 USB for only 20 bucks more, and I am much happier.
great preamp; difficulties installing software on Windows 7 May 30, 2010 So basically i give 5 stars for the audiobox, and 3 for the compatibility of the software with windows 7.
The audiobox itself is an excellent device for recording. Presonus always has great amps and they've included them in the audiobox and in my mind blows out other small preamp/audio interface devices. More than adequate for any amateur artist.
I originally had my audiobox software and associated studio one artist software installed on my old laptop running windows xp and I have no problems whatsoever with it. But when i bought a new laptop with windows 7, i spent hours of frustration trying to sync the audiobox with my computer, and figure out how to install the correct drivers for studio one. The presonus website is fairly unhelpful, but after intense searching i found the latest installer for studio one in the My Account page at the presonus site and was finally able to get all my programs running correctly.
I really don't know what presonus is doing with this software compatibility issue. They have a great audio recording device here combined with the most frustrating, outdated software. So if you're a windows 7, 64 bit user just be prepared that you might have some initial problems installing the software and syncing your devices. Great product otherwise.

good but not for line level Apr 09, 2010 If anybody has a working disc with key they have not used for studio one I would be willing to buy it from you. my email is [...]
Presonus is known for their mic preamps and digital conversion. be careful if you are attempting line level inputs from this however as the same signal path is used for the mic levels and not directly meant for line level input.
Great for recording and a start to the home studio Mar 31, 2010 This does work for Windows 7 users. There is a driver for windows 7 32bit and 64bit on the Presonus webpage. I hooked up my Yahama keyboard through the midi port and it works perfectly with no latency. I also hooked up my electric guitar and it sounds amazing with plugins to change up the type of guitar. I have not hooked a condenser mic yet. The only con is that is says it comes packaged with Cubase 4 but it came with Studio Live instead which I had never heard of. Overall buy this if your starting your own home studio.
