Description

The Masterkey 49 USB MIDI controller keyboard opens the gate to computer music creation. Whatever your style of music, it delivers the control you need to unlock your creativity. Express yourself on the 49 velocity sensitive keys, playing and recording in to any standard MIDI software program or the included Presonus Studio One Artist. The compact design fits perfectly on a computer desk and it's easy to move when not in use. Real-time controls such as the four knobs and the fader can be used to control instrument or mix parameters, even while you play. Professional-style pitch bend and modulation wheels allow you to add further articulation. The 3-digit LED display provides navigational feedback so it's quick and easy to find the right menus for changing MIDI channels, sending out program changes, transposing or programming the real time controls. And if 49 keys are not enough, press the octave up and down buttons to shift the keyboard range up or down instantly. Installation is straightforward, too. Simply plug Masterkey 49 into a USB port on your computer and the operating system will do the rest. Masterkey 49 is USB class-compliant, which means that no driver is needed for supported operating systems.

4Impressed with Masterkey 49  Dec 10, 2011 By Dee
I was in the market for a Midi controller since my laptop didn't have a midi or ps/2 port that could be used with my OLD controller/keyboard (Prodikeys). I looked at a number of controllers, but didn't really need one with touch pads or an extensive number of knobs. I knew I needed more than 25 keys, because I don't like hitting the octave up/down buttons very often, so when I stumbled across the MasterKey line I was curious.
I am very glad that I took a chance with this board. The keys are nice. Not the heaviest but firm. The Pitch bend and modulation wheels feel very nice. The four assignable knobs are nice. I use Fruity Loops and Reason and they both found the board and patched right in. Windows 7 saw the board and loaded the appropriate drivers automatically. Since I use two other DAWS I didn't even bother installing the software that came with it. The edit key does come in handy to manually punch certain commands on the fly. All knobs and sliders are assignable so you can set them to control whatever fits your needs.
The learning curve is going to be different from person to person and software but in the three weeks I've had it I've managed to get the hang of it and come up with some nice sounds. The only gripe I have is until you memorize what each key does in edit mode you need to keep the manual handy. It would be nice if the commands were printed on the board itself but you get used to it.

I would recommend this for anyone who wants to set up a nice home studio. There's little to no latency between key presses and software recognition, but of course that depends on the setup of the machine you're using. The price is great the quality is outstanding for a $100.

5Masterkey 49 USB Controller Keyboard  Oct 31, 2011 By Bass dude
Right out of the box the Masterkey 49 looks like expected. A 49 key light weight keyboard in neutral gray. No power supply since none is needed. A 5foot USB cable that is bound to land in the box where I keep all those 5foot cables I have gathered over the years. A surprise was it to find it bundled with Presonus Studio 1 installation disk, so I made sure that my laptop was fully charged before unwrapping:
I'm not going to use this software but nonetheless I wanted to install it just to see how it worked. Turned out to be a no brainer. It's all automatic.
It's always exciting to plug in something new. No difference with the Masterkey 49. A red zero lights up immediately and my laptop appropriately announces that a Masterkey 49 has been plugged into a USB port and that it is ready for use. I turn some knobs and the little red display instantly reeds out my action. So far so good.
Pressing the keys on this keyboard is a new experience. I have tried a number of these back in the nineties and was often annoyed by the clicking from both pressing and releasing the keys. I imagine that all manufactures have improved their note/click ratio. Anyway,- Clicks are gone!
Counting out the foot switch, all controllers are assignable. I handle my octave joggling in my DAW so the buttons marked "oct" immediately become my channel up and down shifters. The rest of the controllers are very easy to redirect. Use black keys for parameter choice, white keys for data entry,(remember to confirm with the "enter" key!) If your DAW is set up like mine, the Masterkey 49 offers you a fantastic chance of making your computer recording and mixing a hands on experience. You will simply love the fact that it is powered through USB. No tangled cables here. $99 ! We're up and running, no complaints!!
