5A Superb pair of closed cans  Aug 06, 2008 By A. DAS
I decided to take the plunge and take a chance on this relatively new brand and purchase my first real set of headphones (had an akg k26 p before). Got it on Monday and I've been very pleased with it thus far. Bass is right there and should be comparable to many sub $150 headphones (except the DT770s) judging from other user reviews at head-fi.org. I use it primarily for movies and so sound detail is important and the Q40 definetly delivers on that aspect. The build is sturdy (Not a fan of flimsily made headphones... ahem Grados, Senns, Denons) and its not too heavy. My ears started to get warm after about 1 hour but that's expected with any closed style headphones. Isolation is excellent and sound leak is minimal... although certainly no IEM .

The kicker for me was the price of course. at around 100 bucks incl shipping. I don't know any comparable headphone out there at that price range.

Great for
-hiphop, heavy rock, movies, gaming

Look elsewhere if you're into (Denon D1001?)
-classical, techno

5Wonderful headphones!!!!  Oct 21, 2008 By Bobby
I can only say that I completely agree with my other reviewer as I am the second to review these great phones.

M-Audio is a well known name in the music world but this is their first foray into headphones. I am still a beginner audiophile so these were my first entry level purchase. I am coming from the Koss Porta Pro. These are like the big brother Porta Pro, which is everything I was looking for. The bass is definitely present, but not muddy or overpowering.

You would pick these up if you listen to hip hop/rap or rock. These may not be so good for classical or music where you are looking for a large soundstage as closed headphones lack that aspect.

5A short review to call out a nice feature  Oct 16, 2010 By Edward Barnett
Other reviewers have covered the key aspects of these headphones: The quality is good, and they are very comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The purpose of this review is to call out a feature that I particularly like as a parent: The cord is removable and replaceable. I bought these headphones for my 16-year old son, who goes through headphones at a frightening pace. The failure is always at the same place, namely where the cord enters the headphones. With the Q40s, the cord has a standard plug on both ends. This means that the connection is much more durable than with other headphones, and also that the cord can be replaced cheaply if it does wear out. Great design!

One other note: The other end of the cord is a standard 1/4 inch plug, but if you unscrew it you'll find a standard micro stereo plug. At first my son and I both missed this, because it's a screw-off rather than a pull-off connector.

4Used for Mixing  May 09, 2009 By Johnforz
I just got these, and am using them primarily for mixing music. While I mostly mix on reference monitors, I use headphones for detail work like stereo imaging, etc. I was using the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro's, and always felt that while they were honest, especially in the Hi frequencies, they were lacking in the Lo. So I tried out these M-Audio's, and they have definitely have the Lo end punch I was looking for, while not over doing it like the Sony MDR V700's (don't recommend these at all, unless maybe you are a club DJ). These M-Audio's sound great, they are a little less transparent in the Highs than the Sennheisers, so I'll be keeping those for real fine detailing, but the M-Audio's definitely have a much more balanced sound - a good middle ground.

One design flaw, and in my opinion a major one that I just can't understand, is that these come with an uncoiled cable. This makes for a lot more wire-mess, as the cable is really long, and if you decide to twisty it off, you won't have the flex of a coiled wire. The only redeeming thing here is that the wire detaches at the headphone, so it is replaceable. Still, something that annoys me about these.

Overall, recommended headphones.

4M-Audio studiophile Q40 semi perfect  May 09, 2011 By AK the Crumposer
Sound quality compared next to Beats and Boss is awesome for the price... the crispness, bass and volume capabilities of these headphones is superb. i produce music myself and need to hear every instrament low and high, tone and bass is important and these deliver. my only discrepancy is i had them for about 3 weeks. i kept them at home but decided to test them with my iphone and walk around with them to work.... the cable screws into the headphone on the L side so it doesnt yank out but that caused a problem for me. The cable somehow doesnt connect well and seems to have worn out and i can only hear the hi tunes of my songs... i have to jiggle the tip around in the headphone to hear the complete sound... it shorts out. im going to try alternate cables but then again you need the screw in ones. hope this is fixable because they are great sounding headphones
