5Amazing set of headphones  Mar 28, 2010
First of all, AREN'T THESE JUST THE SEXIEST LOOKIN' HEADPHONES YOU'VE EVER SEEN!? Other than the obvious sexiness of them, these are an amazing pair of headphones for just about anything. They are more than perfect for just a casual listen to music on your iPod, or even down to mixing music on the go. Personally, I use them for both. When I'm creating music on Pro Tools I use these as my reference monitors when I'm away from my studio. You can really hear the bottom end SO clearly on these so it's good for any type of music that needs that, whether it be from rock to even dubstep or dance music. Super super clear sound, if you read the technical description of these on the M-Audio website or anywhere else, you'll immediately see that these are good for just about anything. The only problem that I've heard other people talk about in reviews is the included cable. They say it's hard to get a new one, it's difficult to reach M-Audio, and blah blah blah. But honestly, if you take care of the things you own like I do, you won't need to have to replace it. AND HAVING A DETACHABLE CABLE IS A GOOD THING. I mean, come on...what pair of headphones have a detachable cable? It makes it so easy to carry around in its case, fold up, and be on the go with it. I would definitely recommend getting this set of awesomely performing headphones.

5Super headset  Dec 13, 2009
This is a wonderful headset with a nice range in frequencies.
It is a bit big - fits super on my head although my girlfriend feels it's too big.

4Not even close to AKG K 271 headphones  Aug 24, 2009
I have AKG K271 headphones, as well as Sony MDR-7509 professional dynamic stereo headphones and the latter may be fine for listening to music, but doesn't sound nearly good as AKG K271. Hoping to find another pair of headphones that may sound as good as AKG K271, and because AKG K271 has been discontinued and I had some challenge finding AKG K271 II in Canada, I got M-Audio Studiophile Q40, and was frankly speaking greatly disappointed. If you are just looking for headphones to listen to music, I both M-Audio Studiophile Q40 and Sony MDR-7509 may do the job, but if you are professionally editing and mixing music, these are just not as sensitive as AKG K271 - the sound of M-Audio Studiophile Q40, as well as of Sony MDR-7509 is also just too dull compared to AKG K271 headphones and the latter allow you to catch all the finer nuances. If you were listening to classical music, you'd enjoy it way more with AKG 271 headphones than with M-Audio Studiophile, plus the headphones are also way more comfortable to wear. Even though both M-Audio Studiophile Q40 and AKG 271 are extendable, M-Audio Studiophile seems to have been made for narrower heads and if you are working with music professionally and wear headphones all day long, your head and ears will appreciate better AKG K271 headphones.

4Used for Mixing  May 09, 2009
I just got these, and am using them primarily for mixing music. While I mostly mix on reference monitors, I use headphones for detail work like stereo imaging, etc. I was using the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro's, and always felt that while they were honest, especially in the Hi frequencies, they were lacking in the Lo. So I tried out these M-Audio's, and they have definitely have the Lo end punch I was looking for, while not over doing it like the Sony MDR V700's (don't recommend these at all, unless maybe you are a club DJ). These M-Audio's sound great, they are a little less transparent in the Highs than the Sennheisers, so I'll be keeping those for real fine detailing, but the M-Audio's definitely have a much more balanced sound - a good middle ground.

One design flaw, and in my opinion a major one that I just can't understand, is that these come with an uncoiled cable. This makes for a lot more wire-mess, as the cable is really long, and if you decide to twisty it off, you won't have the flex of a coiled wire. The only redeeming thing here is that the wire detaches at the headphone, so it is replaceable. Still, something that annoys me about these.

Overall, recommended headphones.

5Wonderful headphones!!!!  Oct 21, 2008
I can only say that I completely agree with my other reviewer as I am the second to review these great phones.

M-Audio is a well known name in the music world but this is their first foray into headphones. I am still a beginner audiophile so these were my first entry level purchase. I am coming from the Koss Porta Pro. These are like the big brother Porta Pro, which is everything I was looking for. The bass is definitely present, but not muddy or overpowering.

You would pick these up if you listen to hip hop/rap or rock. These may not be so good for classical or music where you are looking for a large soundstage as closed headphones lack that aspect.
