5Excellent Music Speakers for my Mac  Mar 05, 2010
I have used my M-Audio 40 AV speakers now for a long time. They have been problem free. The sound is really good with good bass, high notes and the notes in between the highs and lows. I use mine hooked up to my Mac computer. I think they are a good product worth purchasing.

3Good sounding, but has a background hum  Mar 04, 2010
I'm using these speakers for my computer, so I'm kind of close to them. I am pleased with the frequency response, but I'm disappointed that they have background hum. It's most noticeable when it's quiet. The hum doesn't change with the volume setting so I suspect these speakers may have a power-supply filter-design problem.

4Great sounding speakers, but with a few annoyances  Mar 01, 2010
I bought these speakers to replace my set of logitech z-680s that were dying (power would go out for no reason). When I powered these on and listened to a song, I was amazed at how well these sounded. Before buying these I was worried that these would not shake the room like how my old logitechs would in games, but I was wrong, these have plenty of power for games, but they are only 2.1 speakers. One thing I do not like about these speakers is the power button. Its located on the back of the left speaker and is annoying to power on and off. You have to reach back and find the button and power these off every time you are done using them. Overall I am satisfied with these speakers. If you need good sounding speakers for music and do not need surround sound then get these, you will not regret your purchase.

5Unbvelievable - the best reasonably priced computer speakers anywhere!!  Feb 27, 2010
I've been checking out sub-$400 speakers for my planned for and now assembled computer for some time. Where I live, getting a chance just to see, much less hear, the AV-40s is difficult. But I can be patient, I spent 2 1/2 years and lots of gasoline 25 years ago before I purchased my living room speakers. I was in a store and just happened to ask a salesman if they finally had a pair of AV-40s in stock. He is training to be a professional musician, and I was one before physical problems forced me into retirement, so we had developed a rapport. He said something like, "Yes we have two pairs of them but we're not supposed to take them out of their boxes to demo them". Upshot - he did. He hooked it up to a mediocre source (Ipod)and inside 5 second we were both floored. We listened to them for ten minutes before he saw a managerial type and I said, "I'm buying them and just wanted to see them". The young salesman said great and gave me his card (they get commissions there). He said, "I'll be right back, I'm going hide the other pair until payday." So there you have it. The setup is awkward, headphone slot to RCA in the left speaker (which houses the power amp) and then biax from there to the right speaker, but I still have a few audiophile cables left over from when a specialty store went out of business, and for $10 got two meters of 10 gauge to connect them, 8 gauge could not have fit. Wow, everybody who has heard them (I still have friends who are professional musicians) has raved over them as have others. I don't know how to rate them - seven stars, maybe eight. If you think that these babies need more bass, hook them up with some 10 gauge biax and an audiophile cable to a headphone to RCA plug splitter and you'll change your mind in a big hurry. Loudness problems - sure, if you're throwing a block party, but they do easily play beyond the pain threshold.

In summary buy these speakers and hook them up with decent cables. You will definitely be happy.

1Maybe I got a lemon?  Feb 27, 2010
These speakers were fine when I was listening to my itunes off of my macbook, but when i started to use my Numark mixer, and Traktor scratch pro...nothing but distortion. I'm think that my set up is somehow messed up? I don't know. I guess I'll have to figure it out if I can, if not these are going right back. If anybody has any info to help make these speakers sound better with my mixer pls let me know. Thanks!!
