Throwing them away Jul 04, 2010 The bass notes between 128 and 248Hz, specially the lower C note on the bass guitar, are very loud. No, it's not my room, and it's not the sound card either. I've tried other speakers on the same computer and in the same room and they all sound normal. I then tried these speakers on my friend's system, in his room, and had the same problem. I contacted M-Audio's technical support through their website, and they said that the sound is a matter of taste and is not covered under the warranty. A matter of personal taste, huh? Every time I have people over to listen to some music, they go "WTF!?". "A matter of taste" MY A**!
Also, the headphones output port is totally useless. The volume on the headphones is very low; you have to increase the volume, but then you get a constant static noise on the headphones. Oh, and make sure you lower the volume before unplugging the headphones or you risk damaging your eardrums.
It may have worked well for others, but my speakers are definitely defective and the company is not taking responsibility for it. I ended up paying another $50 to buy Hear ([...]) in order to fine-tune the sound output, but it turns out that the program is not really stable on OS X 10.5 and 10.6 either (it stops working for some reason and you'll have to reboot your machine to make it work again). I'm really pissed off!
I'm leaving these out on the curb tonight and buying a pair of monitor speakers from a local music store AFTER listening to them.
just what I needed Jul 03, 2010 Kind of overkill as computer speakers, but they sound great whether I'm watching a movie at my desk or listening to music in the adjoining rooms.
Pleasant little reference Jun 27, 2010 To be honest, these little speakers are quite clean and solid for the price - but they are more in line with quality multimedia speakers rather than "Reference Speakers". I had them for a month then gave them away yesterday in favor of a pair of entry level KRK's. I thought I might be able to get away with these for portable mixing, but they just seem to struggle a bit when you turn them up and the bass boost loses confidence at all but medium listening levels. Reference speakers are supposed to be able to handle pre-mastered mixing signals with DC offset and unmanaged low end... but these don't cut it. That said, for the price they are a damn sight better than most and paired with a sub would make a very enjoyable setup for listening to mastered music or previewing headphone mixes.
Close to Studio Sound but at a Home Studio Price Jun 23, 2010 I've owned these for a year, and have always loved the sound coming from these things. My small studio needed sound and these "Fit-The-Budget". The sounds are great. . .The Mids and Highs are crispy, and not muddy at all. The bass is left to be desired, but I don't rely on the bass too much.
5 stars for the price tag and the quality of the sound. I would recommend that you pick up the AV40's if you want bigger. It's only $50 more than these, and worth it. If not, these will do just as good!!!
Great Price for Performance Jun 15, 2010 Fantastic performance for the price. They work very well as desktop speakers/monitors to hookup to a Mac/PC. I thought the AV30s would be too big, and that I would have to purchase separate stands, but they are quite compact and fit easily on my desk. Much better than my previous 2.1 Logitech set-up. Well worth keeping track of the price and ordering a pair when the price dips to the 70-80 dollar range.
