| | Description | The ProFire Lightbridge interfaces up to four Lightpipe devices with a PC or Mac via FireWire - perfect for integrating digital mixers, AD/DA converters and/or ADATs with most popular DAW software. The unit is capable of 32 channels of Lightpipe I/O, two channels of S/PDIF I/O and two-channel analog output for a total of 34 x 36 concurrent channels at 44.1 or 48kHz sample rates. (It also supports 16-channel Lightpipe operation at 88.2 and 96kHz sample rates via the S/MUX protocol.) The ProFire Lightbridge can output word clock as a master, or slave to external sync on any input, and MIDI I/O also accommodates MIDI Time Code and MIDI Machine Control. Independent volume controls are provided for the 1/4" balanced outputs and front panel 1/4" headphone jack. The ProFire Lightbridge is compatible with most DAW software including Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3 and higher*. | |

Great Product Mar 17, 2011
By Skillz This product works great in conjunction to the Alesis ADAT HD24 Track recorder. For a long time, I have been looking for a way to record a complete band without having to record a few players at a time. Since I already had the HD24 track recorder by alesis, I also needed to transfer the recordings to a mac for editing. I found the solution and tested after purchasing this product. The HD24 has optical "out" as well as "in" which transfer the signal to the m-audio device instantly then on to the mac through a firewire cable. Great devices for the setup I have, I prevented me from purchasing another digital mixer.
Does a great job once set up Jan 11, 2011
By Orion Burdick I bought this interface because I bought an Apogee AD16x analog to digital converter and needed a way to connect its digital outputs to my PC. This box also has stereo analog outs so that allowed me to use it for recording and playback in Cubase. I have a firewire expansion card for the AD16x, but it only works as an input device in Windows, so the lack of audio output made it impossible for me to do overdubs while monitoring previously recorded tracks. I was happy to find this interface to fill that need.
Pros:
- Buckets of digital inputs. I record in 24bit/96KHz via ADAT, and this box supports the S/MUX protocol required to accomplish that. Since it has 4 ADAT connectors, I can record 16 channels at 24/96 (or 32 at 48KHz).
- Analog outputs. This is crucial for full duplex because ASIO doesn't support having multiple cards of different types, so you can't use one card for input and another unrelated card for output.
- Very low latency. I previously used an Echo Layla24 (from 1998) and a Tascam FW-1884, and those cards had enough latency that triggering things like sampled drums was often tricky without the latency messing up my timing. Now I can even track with some effects turned on without problems.
- Bus powered, so you don't need a separate power cable.
- MIDI support (via breakout cable), which has worked flawlessly for me.
Cons:
- I could not get the newest drivers (6.0.1_5.10.0.5058) to detect S/MUX with my Apogee card, so it would never allow me to record at 96KHz. I had to revert to the 5.x driver to get this to work, and that was after many painful hours of troubleshooting.
- The analog headphone outputs are noisy. Thankfully this doesn't affect the quality of my recordings, so I can live with it. I may switch to using the 1/4" analog outs through my separate headphone amp if that yields better results.
- Not hot-swappable. This is really a problem with the firewire standard and not this particular device. Firewire devices can easily get fried if you plug them in while the PC is on, and I've had this happen before. So I'm following the advice from M-Audio to only connect this device when the PC is powered off.
