Great Interface - some software issues on Mac Aug 31, 2010 First, let me start off by saying that this interface is absolutely worth the money. For the Sub $150 market, I don't think you'll do much better. The interface is clean and works well with GarageBand 09 on Mac OSX. I have only used the instrument in (as I am not a vocalist, and I'm just using this for songwriting and laying scratch tracks right now)
The only problem I encountered was with the included Pro-Tools software. I had difficulty installing on MacOS 10.6.5 (I think). Basically, there is an issue between versions that is corrected by visiting the Digidesign site and downloading an updated installer (8.3).
Convenient Recording Tool Aug 10, 2010 I like this product as it allows me to record vocals and instruments [keyboards and guitar] easily and in high quality using either my laptop or desktop computer. I am not new to computers but surprisingly I initially had a difficult time installing the Pro-Tools software and thereafter enabling it to work with Fast Track. But all is well now.
I appreciate Amazon for having this product swiftly delivered to me. I live here in the Philippines and I expected it to arrive in a week's time but it reached me in just like three days from the time I placed my order.
Wouldn't work at all on OS X 10.4.11 Aug 07, 2010 After installing the latest drivers and hooking everything up, I got a warning from OS X: "USB Over Current Notice. A USB device is currently drawing too much power. The hub it is attached to will be deactivated."
The only other USB devices I had attached were my keyboard and my wireless mouse. Swapping in a wired mouse had no effect. I've never seen that notice before with any other device, including my USB-powered scanner.
The device continues to draw power, somehow, even after that notice, but all the lights are flickering. I confirmed that my mic and XLR cable worked--I could hear them when I switched to Direct Monitor, although they were overlaid with a rhythmic popping/clicking.
M-Audio tech support, at least through their website, seems determined to avoid dealing with the user. On their support page, you'll find six items: Knowledge base, Manuals, Contact tech support, Drivers & updates, Warranty & repair, and "Avid Support Offerings" (?!). Of those, five link to the corresponding pages, but...the tech support item contains no link. Don't call us or email us! We don't want to hear about it!
So, life is too short, there are other devices out there that do the same thing. Back this goes.
Great bang for your buck. Jul 24, 2010 I bought this interface to use with Propellerhead's Record software, and not having a lot of experience with recording software & hardware in general, and given m-audio's support reputation (or lack thereof) I was a little apprehensive, but given that the next worthwhile interface is nearly three times as expensive, I gave it a shot. After having used this, I have to say I'm glad I did!
Installing this thing is a breeze - just download the latest drivers (running win7 x64 myself - m-audio supports it), plug it in and go. Record picked it right up without me having to do anything but select the M-audio ASIO interface in the audio tab. Everything after that worked as expected - create a new audio track & voila - the single input is mapped directly to the track in Record. No muss, no fuss.
A surprising bonus is the audio outputs on this device aren't just simple pass-throughs, but in fact are hooked up to the computer's audio, so if you're performing with a laptop, this could be an inexpensive option to use as an interface, although the outputs are RCA, not 1/4 inch. The one thing that may be a benefit or a hassle, depending on your opinion, is that plugging into the headphone jack appears to automatically silence the audio outs on the back of the device - you can't use both at the same time.
Sound quality seems to be good, given this thing's price. It sounds a little cold, but for around $100, you're not going to get awesome sound - getting a clean, noise-free tone is about as good as you can expect. This device gets the job done.
One last thing - it doesn't appear that the fact that this thing uses USB is a detriment to the latency. I have a fairly old PC as my workstation - an athlon phenom dual core - with 4 gb of ram, and my latency was something like 5ms. If I remember correctly, I think that's in line with a hardware synth, and anything under 10ms is acceptable to most people, so no problems there.
Best audio interface for under $150, hands down.
