Description

A great mix starts with a great recording room. But when it comes to achieving the most accurate mix, your room may have the upper hand. Like any room, your studio's acoustics include offending frequencies and room reflections, and none of these are helping your mix. Getting a handle on these problems has traditionally meant the installation of soft foam or fabrics, and that's a great start. But now you can get even closer to a perfect room, and a perfect mix, because the future of studio sound is here, and it's called ERGO.

1KRK Ergo  Apr 22, 2012 By Giuseppe
First let me tell a little about the excellent service Amazon gave me, in particularly in solving in the fastest imaginable way a shipping problem that was my fault.

About the KRK Ergo I am really disappointed. The calibration process is easy and everything went smooth, and also the results - in untreated room - are surprisingly good. The big problem is that the Ergo stops working at random intervalls whatever the software playing. I use a late 2010 Mac mini and Slow Leopard OS, and the firmware update did not resolve the problem. Moreover, the KRK support is still not answering emails and reading forums on the topic did not help.

My feeling is that the Ergo is a good piece of hardware with a very badly implemented software. It is for sure the worst audio component I have bought so far. My suggestion is - if you have a friend that already has bought it - to test the Ergo thoroughly in your setup before buying it.

3Stumped... I might have just spent $400 on a large Volume Knob!  Oct 26, 2011 By Aurelle
This review isn't to bash KRK for making a product that is "INDEED Snake oil" as many people on forums (that never even used it) say. I've done my research before getting this. I measured my room, and anticipated all the shortcoming it could have because I don't have much or any treatment at all. while there isn't much out there about it, I took my chances. I got this for a good deal NEW at $370.

The first thing I realized that the buttons weren't working while you should be able to swap A/B speakers and correction on and off. Sometimes it would work, but sometimes it wouldn't respond at all. I called customer service and they said that it's defective. I thought the firmware update would help but it's not supported under 64-bit OS. GREAT.

While the buttons did not work, the room analyzing process went very smoothly. It did everything it needed to. To my luck, the defective KRK ERGO would sometimes let me swap between corrected and uncorrected mode. I heard no difference. Only slight difference was when I switched into global mode, where the response changed 'somewhat'. It felt as if the stereo image got slightly wider. I nearly spent $400 on a volume knob! I expect the Knob to be much more sturdier and weighty (like the CENTRAL STATION Kob). It's very plastic and it 'feels' hollow.

I sent the ERGO back for a replacement, but in the meantime I manage to get my hands on a Goldline Realtime Analyzer, and I went over a few sessions checking out the response of my room, especially in the mixing position. The response in my mixing position is nearly, if not flat! I'd like to believe it, but the translation in my mixes are about as accurate as they can get. I'm using a pair of HS80M's. If there's a mix I'm proud of on those, they reflect heavily on my hi-fi's.

At the moment I can only 'believe' that the ergo can do some justice in my room, but if you think that you are having a significant problem in your mixes; take measurements and if it's in the low frequency range, the ERGO will ease that. I noticed when it just came out the going price was $700. I can tell you that it's NOT worth it at that price, not even $500. Just don't make the mistake I did, you might just be sitting on the sweet spot in your bedroom.

4Accurate Room Correction  Nov 30, 2009 By Electric Eccentric "Electric Eccentric"
Samples your room well, and gives you two stages of accurate imaging. I could tell that boomy bass freq and others were cleaned up the very first time that I tried the unit.

However, this is one of those items where you really notice when it is later bypassed. Even the best speakers will sound better in ANY room with this unit.

Its only problem is that the Orient copy factory is now turning out almost identical units for about 1/4 the price.

5Great Optimizer!  Nov 28, 2010 By M. McQuillin
The KRK is great for use in cleaning up my studio playback and editing. I used to have to do a mixdown, then run out to listen to how it sounded in my car.... usually had to do this a couple of times for some stuff. With the ERGO, that part of the process is basically gone. I get a more realistic sound from my room, ergo less time mixing down....
Great little rig... I reccomend it for any studio.
