Excellent quality, poor Linux support Oct 07, 2008
By Kone Bardea The Tracker Pre has excellent audio quality (high dynamic range and SNR on the analog parts and high sample rates and bit depth on the digital parts). The USB-powered microphone phantom power works beautifully.
Alas, Linux support is very poor: it's listed as not supporting Linux, though with a very new Linux kernel (as of Oct. 2008) it just barely works: only at 44.1KHz 16bit and without software volume control.

Doesn't work on OS X Lion May 03, 2010
By Cosmin Lehene Update:
Since Lion runs on 64 bit, it doesn't work at all.
There's a beta driver for Snow Leopard that fixes the crackle problem.
It might be a good interface if you use it on Windows.
I bought it from a music store because it had the Mac icon on the box. The driver installed and it worked for a short time then started to crackle. After some email exchange with EMU/Creative support they told me they don't actually support Snow Leopard and don't have any idea when the driver will be available.
The easiest way to test it is to use a constant frequency tone and switch the Sample Rate (I use Ableton Live with the Test Tone in Audio preferences). The crackle has a constant pattern. Switching sample rates temporarily fixes the problem sometimes, but very rarely and I couldn't find a repeatable recipe. Also rebooting the machine might temporarily fix the issue. "Temporarily" is usually a couple of hours or until you close the lid and open it again (after a sleep).
It also has a problem with audio input (I use it to input from the tv into the speakers). After an hour or so, the sounds distorts and becomes "metallic" - this doesn't seem to be related to the driver however, as it seems to be doing it if I plug it to a windows machine too.
Great sound, but has driver issues. Sep 09, 2010

This little box really does put out great sound, too bad E-MU's drivers don't yet support Win 7 64-bit. Oh it'll run, but after a few minutes your audio will distort to all hell. I could solve this by running it with ASIO4ALL drivers, but you won't get anything above 44kHz.
Audio Recording Works Well But Stereo Output Crackles Aug 16, 2010
By Obadiah Crowley Like the other MacOS user here the left and right channel outputs are noisy. The recording capability works well with Garageband (a few pops and crackles but works well with instruments and phantom powered condensor mics) and it is easy to switch sound output between the Tracker or the system output of my iMac G5. The headphone output on the tracker is not noisy so i don't know why the left and right channels are.
Huge bang for the buck! Jul 13, 2010

This little box is quite a pleasant surprise. Great sound quality (full 192/24 hi-res) for playback over USB. The DAC gives a very natural sound with a fairly wide soundstage. The built-in headphone amp is decent (I've tried it with the Audio Technica ATH-A700 and the Grado SR-60i, both with great results), but I suspect it would probably struggle with some of the higher-end cans out there. It also lacks the digital input that's included with its big brother, the 0404 USB. But compromises had to be made somewhere, right?
The Tracker Pre doubles as an excellent recording device, as evidenced by some of the great-sounding 192/24 vinyl rips I've done with it so far (you'll need a couple of RCA phono-to-1/4"-mono adapters for analog input, though). I was having a bit of trouble with some high-frequency hum during recording, but this was solved by using the ground lift switches located on the underside of the unit (I didn't even know they were there until I read the troubleshooting part of the manual!). No hiccups whatsoever on either Windows XP or Vista SP2. All in all, a truly great value in audio at this price!
