1Unreliable. Barely lasted a year.  Aug 14, 2009 By P. Igoe "Patrick"
I bought the Alesis Multimix 16USB 2.0 in June of 2008. In July of 2009, just out of warranty, it developed a loud hum which makes it unusable. (No, it's not a ground loop. It is even there in the headphone output with all inputs disconnected.)

My Alesis Ion was even worse, having the encoder knob jitter problem and requiring service. At least that failure occurred under warranty.

It's a shame. In the QS6/7/8 era, Alesis made some high quality, reliable, and high value products. Now, it's poorly engineered junk. Pay a bit more and go with a Yamaha or Mackie.

3Driver support - A Greek Tragedy...  Mar 05, 2011 By Walter Blackledge
Alesis does a really poor job in keeping its drivers updated on its current product line.

The drivers for the MulitMix 16 USB 2.0 is written by a Greek company. This company is not the problem, Alesis doesn't seem to want to pay them for updates so you end up with "Rice Krispies" (snap, crackle and pop ) coming out of your mixer after few minutes of use requiring a reboot. Other than that it's a good mixer. I guess Alesis has decided that you don't have to be beautiful to get lucky, you just have to be the prettiest in the room.

4Works as advertised  Feb 05, 2011 By John C. Lovell
I'm recording my 5 piece band, and selected the Alesis for its 18 channel (16 channels, 2 main mix) USB output. The mixer works well for playing live, and all channels are available for recording with the included Cubase LE 4 software.

MUTE/ALT3-4 works well for muting the guitars and drums so they don't come out the main mix, but they are always sent through the USB channels. I give 4 stars on the live side because there is no monitor mix/output available. This is a minor nit.

Cubase LE 4 was very difficult to install on a Mac. The Cubase files are in a sub-folder on the DVD and the Mac installer can't find them. The Alesis website instructs you to copy that folder to a new DVD! It worked, but how clunky is that? 2 stars for installation.

PC installation was a piece of cake.

Actual recording has been painless, once I figured out how to map the USB signals to channels in the Cubase software. On the first day we recorded several songs and overdubbed clean vocals. The sound is very good.

I've only had it for two weeks, so I can't comment on the reliability issues that others have reported.

4 stars overall

1Unreliable  Jan 03, 2011 By ibullock
I bought one, it worked great for a few months, and then developed a loud hum that made it unuseable.

I got a second through warranty service (brand new unit), and it worked great for a few months, and then the exact same thing happened.

Unfortunate, since the product really does work quite well until this happens, but I really can't recommend it due to the reliability issues.

1WDM driver does not support 10 channels  Apr 25, 2012 By YoungHwan Yeo
Updated on April 24, 2012
------------------------------
After written this review, I have continuously asked to update its driver and software so that I may be able to choose Main Mix L&R in programs based on WDM drivers but without success. The representative of Alesis just finanlized this issue saying that they cannot.

The representative of Alesis told me that it was only me who asked to update its software in order to support 10 channels in non-multi-channel supporting WDM based programs as it is advertised in its own homepage. Since it is uncommon to implement only one customer's request, It will not happen for Alesis to implement my request.

So it is finalized. Alesis USB 2.0 mixer series do not support now and will not support in the future as well 10 channels in WDM based programs. If you want to use WDM based normal programs with Alesis USB 2.0 mixer series, You can only use Mic&Line 1 and Mic&Line 2 channels. You cannot use Main Mix L&R and all other channels.

This is not only problem of Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 but also Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 FX and Alesis Multimix 16 USB 2.0.

According to Alesis, Multimix 8 USB 2.0 supports 10 output channels and 2 return channels in both ASIO and WDM mode. Regarding ASIO driver, it is true but regarding WDM driver, it is half true. It depends on the program.

Regarding ASIO driver, the programs which use ASIO driver are all professional audio editing/mixing programs such as Nuendo, Cubase, Adobe Audition and so for. All those programs support multi-channels, so the user can select channels in the program. However, it is totally different story in WDM driver based programs. Most WDM based programs are not professional audio editing/mixing programs except Sonar which provides ASIO and WDM mode at the same time. They do not support multi-channels. As the result, a user cannot select channels that the user wants to use. In WDM mode, the user only can use first two channels among 10 channels. Here is the list that the channels that Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 supports.

01: Mic and Line 1
02: Mic and Line 2
03: Mic and Line 3
04: Mic and Line 4
05: Line 5
06: Line 6
07: Line 7
08: Line 8
09: Main Mix L
10: Main Mix R

General WDM driver based programs use the first two channels as default. As you see, the first two channels are Mic 1 and Mic 2 channels. Those two channels are the only channels that you can use in WDM mode except Sonar. It is totally falsity that Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 supports 10 channels in WDM mode unless you use programs which support multi-channels. The problem is that the majority of recording programs in WDM world do not support multi-channels in reality. So considering the reality, it is absolutely false that Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 supports 10 channels in WDM mode.

Let me talk about the difference between Sound Card and Audio Interface. Sound Card is the basic device which makes sount input and output from and to a computer with some other optional features such as 3D effects. Usually Sound Card has stereo inputs and 5.1 or 7.1 outputs. Audio Interface is an advanced device providing more good quality and options in inputs and outputs. Usually Audio Interfaces has more than 2 inputs and outputs. Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 should be under this category, Audio Interface, not Sound Card. However, Alesis needs to notice that whether they intended or not, they are breaking their boundary from professional mixing device to Sound Card area releasing Multimix series. it means that there should be people who expect Sound Card feature from Alesis mixers like me . There should be people who select Alesis mixer after comparing Alesis multimix series and Sound Blaster series.

Here is a question popped up. What would be the standard for general purposed recording programs? Would it be Sound Card? Or would it be Audio Interface? Definitely Sound Card is the standard. This is the reason that the majority of WDM driver based programs do not support multi-channels. The input channel of Sound Card is stereo. General recording programs do not need to support multi-channels since their target device is Sound Card. This is why a user cannot choose channels in general purposed WDM driver based programs. You can use only first two channels for recording audio in WDM based programs which are Mic 1 and Mic 2 line in Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0. In order for a user to choose input channel in WDM driver mode, Alesis should provide a way for that. Since Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 is not standard device, it is Alesis' responsibility to keep the compatibility to Sound Card. In this sense, Alesis may need to do more work for WDM driver and utilities than ASIO driver.

Basically Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 is a mixer targeting audio engineers and musicians. This unit is really well made unit for this purpose. The professional or amateur musicians and audio engineers would want to use it for music recording. In this case, they will use professional audio mixing/recording programs which would definitely support multi-channels.

But I am trying to use it different than its original purpose. I wanted to use this unit for recording lecture in Camtasia or Bandicam. Camtasia and Bandicam are not professional audio recording/mixing programs. In this sense, certainly, I am not the traditional type of customer. I am rather a new type of customer that Alesis would not much experienced before.

The programs that I use are like general purposed programs which do not support multi-channels. Here, the real matter is that I want to use Main Mix L&R channels. Mic 1 and Mic 2 lines are not balanced. In order to use these channels like stereo, I have to connect my microphone to both Mic 1 and Mic 2 channels at the same time. Providing balanced microphone input is the basic feature that every Sound Card has. It is inconvenient. Moreover, those channels give less gain than Main Mix channels. For those inconvenience, I prefer to use Main Mix L&R channels. But currently there is no way to change the input channels from Mic 1 and 2 to Main Mix L&R. Basically Alesis does not provide its core feature, 10 channels, to the majority of WDM driver based programs. It is very weird thing. However, is there really no ways to change it? There is one. If Alesis provides a utility to change the first two channels, it will be solved. This is an issue of software and Alesis' will. Once Alesis decide to solve it, it will be solved.

In this point, I was disappointed and give low grade. It is understandable that Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 does not fully support 10 channels in WDM driver mode at this point. There is no perfect things in our life. We always live with hope that there would be better things in the future and try to make the hope in real. Alesis failed at this point. Since this is not a physical or unit problem, it can be solved. But Alesis did not show will to solve this problem actively. Actually I asked to update this unit's driver and utility to solve this problem but a representative of Alesis told that they do not have plans to update it. It is really different to have problem with hope to solve in the future and having problem lasting forever.

I felt that Alesis neglects customers who want to use this unit for general purpose, not for professional audio and musical recording. Indeed, professional recording programs are not majority among the recording programs. The majority of recording programs are WDM based, non-multi-channels supporting programs. Alesis is neglecting this majority programs and the current and potential customers who want to or need to use those non-multi-channels supporting programs. As far as USB 2.0 supporting mixer series concerned, if one's major purpose of using Audio Interface is not musical recording which requires professional audio mixing/recording programs with definite multi-channels support, one would be less valuable customer to Alesis at least at this point. Alesis does not have a plan to fully support this group of people now.

This is a common problem of all Alesis Multimix series with USB 2.0 support. Alesis Multimix series with USB 1.1 support do not have this problem because they do not support multi-channels. They only support stereo channel.
