Great analog outs Oct 15, 2008

I had been using a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum for a couple of years with a pair of Swan M-200's to play lossless .wma files from my PC. The sound was ok, but not what I'd call high-end. That started a search for some better audio solutions. Targeting a card with high quality stereo analog outs, the m-audio kept getting nice reviews. That led me to give it a try, and I'm very glad I did. Great sound. I think it's probably borderline high end.
No comments on the balanced connections or the midi interface -- not using those, but for high quality stereo, this card is the best I've used.
Works on Windows 7 Mar 05, 2011
By shawn g. Had to move the card in a different slot and sometimes my wireless card effects latency. But all in all it was less than a hundred and worked with a gaming rig fantastically. I have it run a daw with plugins and works.

After reading lot of other customer reviews on the complications on getting this card to work, I wasn't sure how to get that started on my windows XP SP3 desktop. After fitting it, had to switch between the drivers given in the card and to the one in the site, few times to make it working. Finally it was the drivers in the CD that got it to work.
As for the sound, I had it connected to my altec lansing desktop speakers and initially I knew the sound was different from what I used to hear but was not sure if it was better or worse. In the back of my mind, I thought it could be worse as this card is quite outdated.
Then I went on with some critical testing. Connected the output (Analog) to my denon 3805 receiver and chose the def tec pro 1000 speakers to evaluate. Many might wonder why the small speaker. I have my computer in a smaller room and the def tec sounds great in it and have a sub to take care of the LFE.
I noticed the sound was smoother and crispier with good imaging. Then I tried connecting it to my brother's pioneer receiver and it sounded even better for stereo. I also compared the outputs between the analog and the digital one from the card and found the analog to be smoother sounding.
I also tried it on my brothers Musical Fidelity M6i amp and WOW! this card sure does sound good, no doubt about it. The centre imaging is spot on with stereo material, provided your amp is up for it. previously I had tried connecting the MF amp via the USB port, so the amp used to do the DAC work, which sounds terrific. This card surely sounds just as good as that.
As for the material I used to evaluate this card, I have several 24 bit songs purchases via Linn and the recording quality of those are second to none. They sound amazing via this card. The digital output sends the 24 bit data and if your receiver is up for it, it displays it as LPCM 96. Also use Media Monkey audio player to get the right output. You may not see the output data rate change in the M-audio console while using other players.
Bottom line, this card is truly worth the money for 2-channel and muti channel setup. It outputs multi channel audio (DD and DTS) via the spdif. Power DVD can do this after selecting output via spdif.

Great Sound Card Dec 30, 2009

I had all my music on my hard drive and decided to upgrade and try to get some better sound out of my system. I checked for sound cards all over the web and really wanted the Onkyo but you can't get it in the US...or at least I couldn't find it. After reading reviews for the 2496 I decided to give it a try and I'm glad I did.
The card went in very easily, XP found the hardware and it installed in seconds. I had previously downloaded the latest driver from the M-Audio web site...which was suggested by another user...and had installed it already (don't use the drivers on the cd). The wizard found the driver with no problem. I rebooted and everything worked the first time.
The sound is incredible and a substantial upgrade from what I had. I had also purchased Belkin Pure AV cables...no sense upgrading the sound card without upgrading the cables...and the combo really shines.
I've got the sound going through an old Aiwa bookshelf system. It has 6 preset EQ settings and the system pretty much butchers the sound. I always had to use the EQ settings to get any 'decent' sound but I'm getting great sound now with the settings turned off. I spent several hours last night listening to old favorites all over again.
The next step is getting a nice amp to run it all through. I'll probably get a NAD C352 and then a nice set of cans and I'll be complete.
Note: I'm strictly a two-channel listener. I don't use it for gaming or HT
