Bleh, it's fun to mess around with, BUT... Nov 29, 2005

It's a great practice tool, but you can't really record a song with it. It does allow you to record what you are playing, but you can't record with a background (drum loop, bass, etc.) unless you purchase the GT Player 2.5 software that'll set you back another 115 bones. You buy this and you'll get a stripped down version that's merely fun to practice with and record an idea or play along with a song. Eh, it's neat and the recordings are fantastic quality, but I wish someone would've told me this before I went out and bought it. It would've made the difference I guess. The other draw back is that it doesn't use your existing audio hardware and when you install this device it becomes your new "sound card" unless you do some fiddling around and if you have speakers then you'll have to run them through this device. I haven't returned it because I'm having enough fun with it as it stands. Also you MUST have Windows XP (MUST HAVE). I found that out the hard way, but luckily I have XP on my laptop (but I tried installing it on my desktop's Win2K and it was difficult to get it off). Those are the pro's and some of the con's, but...eh, it's alright, just a scam to lure you into spending more money on the full blown version.

Works great on a Mac w/ Garage Band Apr 24, 2009

I bought this with the sole purpose of connecting it to my Mac, and having a better interface into Garage Band than the 1/8" audio in. The unit works great. Before installing it, I went to the M-Audio website and pulled the latest drivers, installed those, rebooted, plugged in the JamLab, connected my guitar, told Garage band through the settings what the input was, and I was off and running.
It works perfectly!
I haven't explored any of the software it came with, so I can't speak to that. However if you're looking for something to easily connect your guitar to your Mac via USB, you can't go wrong with JamLab. It's small, easy to use, and works great.

Still a great product Feb 18, 2009
By M. Soderberg I have no idea why the other reviews had such problems with this thing - my guess is they did not read the manual!
Follow the instructions and install it like they tell you, and it works great.
The accompanying software is freeware, but is NOT recording software. You need ReWire compatible software for easy digital recording (otherwise you'll have to do it the old-fashioned analog way).
The included software does however offer you a LOT of flexibility in creating all sorts of guitar sounds, and it comes with a music player that allows you to play along to mp3 (or wav) files, which is great.
My only complaint is that it "takes over" the sound card on the computer, but that's only when the JamLab is plugged in, it releases when it's disconnected.
For the price, this things is worth every penny for the hobby musician.

Works perfectly for me Nov 29, 2009

I use this on my MacBook Pro and it worked perfectly from the get-go for me. I installed the software, plugged it in and off I went. I use it almost daily connected to Garageband for my own personal band practice. I like to record practice, throw it on a track in Garageband then practice along with it. It's easier to work our leads and parts when I can play it over and over again without the real band there. I love it because it's so easy.

Killed my computers sound when removed Dec 31, 2007
By Mark After spending nearly an hour getting it to run I decided it wasn't worth it and removed the software and hardware.
Now my computer has no sound at all and I've even reloaded the orignal drivers. I would recommend this product only to people you don't like. I've had viruses do less damage.
