I'm having a blast! Those within earshot, not so much Jun 29, 2011
By Comdet I love music but unfortunately lack much -- or rather, any -- talent when it comes to playing an instrument. But, to the dismay of those in my household, I've never let lack of talent stand in the way of having fun trying to coax a tune out of a variety of instruments.
This is an absolute blast! I've not played with an electronic keyboard for several years, and was absolutely amazed at the capabilities of this keyboard given the price. The wealth of tools and capabilities offered by the software is incredible - all sorts of templates, options and effects are available. As I understand it (and this may be incorrect), the software that comes with the keyboard is a "mini" version of a more extensive software package offered by Avid. I've been using this for several days, and feel like I'm only scratching the surface of the software capabilities, so I doubt I'll ever outgrow it, even if this is the "mini" version.
The instructional materials are nicely done. Although the size of the tool box offered is deep, you can also just jump in (as I did) and start playing after running a short tutorial. Really learning all the options, and going through all the tutorials and lessons requires some time commitment.
Installation was straightforward. I'm using it on an older laptop running Windows XP. The performance is fine, but this clearly would benefit from a more up-to-date and faster PC. But it's very workable even on an older system.
The keyboard itself is better than I expected at this price point. All plastic, but it seems reasonably sturdy. I don't think it would stand up to being pounded at constantly, but it feels as if it will easily stand up to a decent amount of use. The key feel is very different from a real piano. That's not a problem for me, nor do I expect it would be for most amateurs. However, if you're more skilled at the keyboard, you may find the key feel to be awkward or limiting.
You can hook it up to speakers or earphones. Unfortunately for those within earshot, I use the speaker route, since I find it hard to concentrate when I only hear the music through earphones. I use the reasoning that the one who pays the mortgage has the right to make as much joyful noise as desired; those who disagree are free to move out of earshot.
Highly recommend for anyone with an interest in creating music on a reasonable budget. I see this especially great for kids (perhaps 12or 13 and up) who want to explore their musical creative side without spending a lot. But also a huge amount of fun for kids in their fifth decade of life!

Nice Keyboard, Great Value Mar 14, 2011

This keyboard works very well for me. I use it for playing around, composing original music for home movies and teaching my kids to play. It works well with GarageBand, and plugs into an iPad (with the usb camera adapter) for a great portable GarageBand experience.
Pros: -Most importantly, it sounds really good. -It comes with an extensive array of musical instruments. -It is light and portable. -It is inexpensive.
Cons: -Requires a dongle for connecting speakers and microphone. Not a big deal, but why? -Key pressure sensitivity could be better, but it's easy to adjust to this. Don't expect a Gershwin Baby Grand experience for this price.
I expect to get many years of service from this general purpose but quality oriented instrument.

Great System For Anyone With Musical Interest Nov 17, 2011
By M. Pickering Many will recognize Avid as being a respected name in the computer software market. Their Studio software is of the most intuitive and easy to use video editing packages I have ever experienced. So when Avid packaged together the M-Audio 49-key USB keyboard, along with Pro Tools audio software, I just had to give this system a test drive.
Please keep in mind, I am not a professional musician. I have played the keyboard for years, but I am not a performer, and only play for my own pleasure and relaxation. I have been using PC audio recording software for many years, and Pro Tools is a name I am very familiar with.
The Avid KeyStudio kit comes with the M-Audio KeyStudio 49-note keyboard, which is essentially a touch-sensitive, 4-octave, USB controller. The keys feel a bit mushy at first, but I was able to get used to them pretty quickly. There is a volume control slider, octave and transpose buttons, and both pitch bend and modulation wheels on the left side of the note keys. The back of the device is pretty bare; with only the USB jack, a sustain pedal input, and power input socket. There are also holes in the top of the keyboard, above the note keys, for adding a wire-framed music stand. Of course this stand is optional and sold separately.
The included Pro Tools software is the SE version, which basically means it is a stripped down, lite version of the well-known, professional quality audio production and recording software that is used by many musicians today. Now the buyer should know that the full-featured Pro Tools software package costs hundreds of dollars on its own, without any USB keyboard controller. The included lite version of the Pro Tools software is actually quite impressive, and will give amateur musicians some studio quality effects and recording capabilities. So for the money this Avid KeyStudio kit is quite a bargain. But if you're looking for a full-blown, feature packed recording studio software package, geared toward professional musicians, then you will want to invest the extra money in the full Pro Tools software package.
Installation of both the keyboard controller and the software is extremely simple and straightforward. Be patient, and the software does take a little while to install. I had the entire system up and running within about 15 minutes or so. Sound quality is impressive, and the choice of instruments is adequate; although I would have liked a larger selection. Please keep in mind, the keyboard is a USB controller only. There are no speakers built-in, and the keyboard doesn't even have a headphone jack. It does, however, come with a USB dongle, that allows you to connect a microphone, headphones, amplified speakers, or any amplified stereo sound device. Why they didn't just build these ports into the keyboard I have no idea. It's not a really big deal, but adds a bit of frustration and just seems mindless of the manufacturer to design it like this. The software is quick to launch and ran flawlessly on my Windows 7 (64-bit) PC. For beginners this software may look a little intimidating, and there will be a bit of a learning curve. But after you jump in and play around with it, everyone will see that the controls make sense, and most will find it easy to learn. For veteran Pro Tools users, you will notice that this version is dumbed down quite a bit, and missing most, if not all, of the more advanced features you are used to in the full version.
Overall I am quite impressed by the Avid KeyStudio package. It is a great tool for anyone with an interest in music, and is priced low enough that it even makes sense for a young student that is just learning to play. It is fun to play the keyboard, and once you get used to the effects and recording features of the software, the whole experience is a total blast! I would prefer weighted keys, with better velocity sensitivity. But for the money this keyboard is far better than a lot of alternatives out there in this price range. This package was not designed to be a high-end system. So for what it is, I give it 5 stars. For around a hundred clams, you just can't get better quality, sound, or features than what Avid has brought to the table here. It's an excellent product which I highly recommend.

Your very own little Recording Studio!! Jun 28, 2011

The Avid KeyStudio keyboard is a high quality machine for a very low price. This keyboard has so many selections where you can create your own sounds from a bass guitar to a hip-hop drum. The adapter (which is included) allows you to install a headphone and also a microphone (not included) for an even bigger music experience. You can select beats and tones from a program that is very easy to install on your computer and even easier to program your selections and prepare you to make great music and possibly become the next super producer.
Music is becoming so popular with children today this will help them expand their musical knowledge and also broaden their creative skills. Install your software, hook your keyboard to you computer, and get started it's that simple.
I think this is a good way to introduce music back into a child's life and give them a great creative outlet. This will keep you and your children busy for hours and my family is enjoying this keyboard. Great product that I highly recommend to create your own little recording studio..

Just what the doctor ordered Jun 23, 2011

"Family, Freedom, Prosperity"
I've been looking for some time for a nice keyboard to work with my computer. I have a 9yo disabled son with language processing issues, but a great ear for music. I have high hopes of being able to help him overcome his language obstacles, as well as develop his musical talent using the Avid KeyStudio. And of course, my karaoke-loving daughters will now have a new medium to express themselves and the opportunity to create and share music on a whole new level.
I was really pleased at how big and substantial this thing is. This is not your kids' rinky-dink keyboard, but a hearty toy for big boys. With 46 full-size keys, this piece of equipment is ready for anything. I mean, think about it: with only 10 fingers (or even with another artist playing duet...) do you really need the other 42 of a standard keyboard when you can digitally modify the octave, tone and instrumentation?
Most middle class homes now have computers, while fewer and fewer have pianos. Too expensive, too hard to fit in a compact space, too hard to move around, etc., etc., etc. When I consider the power and potential behind this for a budding artist to compose and develop their own art, I get almost giddy. I think we're seeing the beginning of a revolution in composition, for the price of a keyboard. How can any conscientious and involved parent afford to be without one? Skip the video games and buy your kids an Avid KeyStudio.
