One of the best headphones under $100 Feb 20, 2010 I own a pair of Grado SR80 for years using a Grado headphone amplifier in my office. The Grado serves me well except it is not the most comfortable pair of headphones. The other problem is the open design which leaks out sound which may disturb my officemates.
I have been searching for a replacement on and off for a while. Finally, I read enough reviews and jumped on eBay and scored a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50 for under $100 shipped.
Without burn-in, I would say these compare really well (at par) with Grado SR80. Although I think the sound stage presented by SR80 is wider may be due to the open design. M50 with the closed back design seems a tad closed in. But, nevertheless, the sound right out of the box is really good.
I can say a good pair of headphones can certainly beat loudspeakers that cost 10x even 20x. My Dunlavy SCII with Velodyne DD15 will shy away in comparison with M50. Very neutral and detailed sound stage. The fitting is a bit tight. I plan to stretch it out using my desktop PC while doing some burn-in.
Initial comparison with Grado back to back, I noticed the following:
1. At same volume level, M50 plays louder than SR80
2. Sound isolation of M50 is pretty good, plan to use it on airplane
3. The sound stage of SR80 is wider
4. M50 has better bass than SR80
5. Highs and mids are very close with slight preference for M50
6. Fit and comfort of M50 is better but I hope it will loosen up a bit after use
7. Build quality is much better for M50 - obviously SR80 foam cushion is deteriorating after a few years of use
I'll update this review when the burn-in is complete.

Update after 100-hour burn-in
Sound updates:
I compared to my office-mate who owns a pair of Sennheiser HD 280 Pro. Right off the bet, we both noticed how much more open the ATH-M50 sounded. This is before the burn-in.
I am even more impressed after the burn-in. The close-in that I commented before comparing to my Grado SR80 is now gone. The bass also improves quite a bit.
Off course, my home system with Velodyne DD15 packed a better punch but this is not a fair comparison.
Comfort:
Stretching for 100 hours also loosened up the fit so it is very comfortable. My only gripe is the top of the headband still has a pressure point. I might just bend to provide a better fit.
All in all, if you are shopping for a sub $100 headphone, you cannot go wrong with this one. Highly recommended!
Best closed cans for monitoring Feb 06, 2010 These headphones are closed type, so they give you some insulation from outside noise. There are one of the best of this type; music sounds like music, unlike other closed type models. Although they don't give the highest isolation from noise, they are nonetheless good good for travel, and, although large, they fold up nicely. A better choice than those that rhyme with Nose.
More even in frequency response than most of this type. An excellent set, although closed phones never sound quite as good as the open ones. Great for all kinds of monitoring; non-fatiguing.
Hear it like a pro~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dec 31, 2009 Absolutely fantastic set of headphones with surprisingly good sound seal for isolation in noisy environments. When I purchased these I had an opportunity to try about a dozen different competitive products including Sony MDRSA5000 and they literally blew away all including those at twice the price and more. Crisp full range, true bass and well balanced mids for a full spectrum sound experience. You can easily identify sounds in a front back and side to side range. A perfect blend between audiophile and studio monitor needs. Also, very comfortable to wear for extended periods. Highly recommended.
Great Heaphones Dec 25, 2009 I got these guys for a christmas gift. I work a lot in protools and logic at home for 11 years as well at work I do a lot of clean up work for tape to cd. These are very accurate and I spent 6 months looking for a pair of headphones I could use for those late night sessions and tracking when I couldn't use my mackie mr 8's. I really didn't wanty to spend a saturday night mixing on crap headphones only to find out the next day my mixes were all off setting me back. These guys really go hand and hand with good studio monitors and checking back on your mixes.
I would even suggest giving your songs a second listen on these guys after you mixed on a set of nice studio monitors! You might find some things you didn't catch at first! If you're like me and want a great pair of mixing headphones these are the ones. They do justice for hd rigs with good converters...If you spent a lot on preamps, hd rig, apogee rosetta and lynx conversion or any other low to high quality rig you want these to compliment them and for the price you can't go wrong.
I would go as far as recommending them for the casual user however they are what they say they are. They are not extremely colored and if a mix is done well it will sound awesome but if it was done bad you will hear that too as they are meant to be truthfull. I wish I would of got these sooner when I couldn't afford a proper pair of studio monitors a ways back. These are a great solutioin for the project studio that just doesn't have 600+ to spend on studio monitors and needs to nail some mixes and on a budget. Seriously don't sacrafice your mixes with cosumer speakers or headphones drop 100 or so on these guys and you will be very happy with the outcome :)

Amazing Nov 15, 2009 These headphones are fantastic. I previously owned a set of Sennheiser HD-280 Professional Headphones. While they are a great pair of entry headphones, the ATH-M50s are superior. The bass is tight and, compared to the HD-280s, it feels like there is a sub-woofer near your ears. The other frequencies are also very accurate and clear. I can hear tiny details in the music that I didn't hear before.
The ATH-M50s do need some break-in time. Out of the box, I thought they sounded awful. The bass was okay, but the mids and highs were diminished and a little muddy. After using them for a few hours I heard a noticeable difference; all the frequencies settled into place and became much more transparent.
Two complaints: (1) needs a slightly longer cord and (2) isolation is not as good as the HD-280s. Isolation is fine for blocking out the environment, but in quite areas everyone would be able to tell what you're listening to.
These headphones are a terrific value! Very much worth the price.
