Awesome Headphones!! Jan 03, 2012
By Justin These brought a smile to my face the first time I heard them. They really do sound amazing, and will only get better with time. The sound is incredibly detailed, hence why it is called a reference headphone. Some reviews I read on various forums have said that these have "no" base however I don't see where that is coming from. I mean, these have good bass, I guess if you compare these to a bass heavy headphone then these headphones have less bass, but certainly not "no" bass. I have a pair of DT770's which are known for bass and compared to the Q701's they are more bassy/punchy however the Q701 still have very good bass, especially for an open ear headphone. I would highly recommend these headphones if you like acoustic and/or vocal heavy music. If you prefer bass these may not be for you, however if you are coming from ipod earbuds or the like, these will blow those away regardless.

World Class Headphones Apr 08, 2011

"music fan"
I purchased these here on Amazon several months ago. I have listened to them extensively since and I have found that the new Q 701 is indeed the new Reference Headphone in the AKG 700 series line. I listen to these phones using a dedicated headphone amplifier, (the Schiit Lyr Hybrid tube amp), and I source them with my NAD C 565BEE CD player. This combo really brings out the best in my music collection. The Q701 delivers in spades. Bass is deep and full without being hyped up. The treble is smooth yet extremely detailed. Vocals just soar and sing. The soundstage is wide and deep, with good height also. The sound is laid out in front of you with each instrument clearly defined. I have played all kinds of music on these and they sound fantastic with any well recorded CD. Classical music is especially good, as is acoustic jazz. Rock, blues and country all sound good. Overall I would describe these headphones as smooth and natural sounding. They are open backed phones so sound does leak into the room. These phones require a good headphone amp to bring out their best qualities, but when amped well they punch far beyond their price point for excellent sound quality. Highly recommended.

Great product for the price Jan 17, 2012
By Aidenag These are about a good a deal as you can get for reference quality headphones. By far the most comfy i have ever worn, and the sound is impeccable. They are not the best headphones for bass heavy music, but for soundstage and clarity you would have to go twice as expensive to top them. And for those who do buy em, be warned. These have a REALLY long break-in period. I'm probably at about hour 150+ now and just now starting to hear the cans in full force. It was a night and day improvement too, so if you think they sound too tame or weak out of box, give it a few weeks, they will warn up a lot.
Pro's: Great for live, acoustic, classical, jazz, pretty much anything that isn't hard metal, rap or dub. can barely tell they are on they are so comfy for my head(and i got a big head too) comes with a 10 and 20ft cord
Cons: Not good for rap, hip hop, dub-step, or heavy metal oriented music. e.g., anyone looking for bass heavy cans won't like em. The cables connection to the headphones is proprietary so modding, or replacing is more challenging A bit too much plastic than i would of preffered. But they have so far withstood a few decent sized drops without any damage These cans WILL NOT work properly on a standard headphone jack from a laptop, onboard sound card etc. You will need an upgraded sound card, or an external AMP/DAC to really get these up to power.

AKG Q701 A Sucessor to the Classics Apr 06, 2012
By Daniel I have to admit, after burning n these cans for over 150 to 200 hours, the sound is warmer than the K701/702.
You will NOT get the ultra heavy bass like the Dr Dres (which sucks by the way)
But the bass from these Q701s are clear and present. It is almost a perfect bass balance. The mid-bass is excellent as well...
Midrange is extremely well detailed. Love the midrange and the uncolored sound. High frequency range is very good, not a perfection as the midrange these headphones offer, but very good. The high frequencies from these cans (of course with high quality recording or CD) are definitely not ear hurting...
I can listen to sharp female opera voice to violins for hours without ear strains from the high frequency range...
Getting an amp and an internal/external USB sound card for your PC/Mac is a good idea... But plugging it into an iPod is also fine, but the sound will not be as good.
If you do want to use with an iPod, I recommended older iPods with the Wolfson DACs... Such as iPod Video 5G/5.5G, iPod touch 1G, Nano 1G etc.. Or even the PS Vita, which has a Wolfson Micro DAC, because of the Wolfson Micro, which is energy efficient, the max sound output will not be that high...
Highly recommend a portable amp for use with portable plays (such as the E-series from Fiio)
The AKG Q701 are great cans, very neutral, very crisp and detailed, a bit warmer than the K701/702...
But these headphones a times still sound a bit analytical, which is fine if you are mixing/mastering.. But it may not be the casual listener's choice of analytical... Casual listeners should look for a bit more color and fun cans, I recommended the AudioTechnica M50
Overall, I feel the Q701 is a great improvement over the legendary K701/702 classics cans.
The bit more warmer, bit more easier to drive, and the colors are higher contrast and looks a bit better...
If you have a K701/702, upgrade now to the Q701s.
If you have a K601, keep the K601s, not worth the upgrade.

Simply the best Jan 11, 2012
By T. Arnold Ok...... I hemmed and hawed over these headphones. It was a choice of either the grado 325s or these. My lovely fiance' bought me the Grado's for a christmas present. (pretty awesome I know) The grado's let me down in that they don't have an 1/8 inch phone plug .... just the 1/4 in plug. I've been building headphone amps lately and everything I have built has a standard 1/8 in mini plug. So with a tear in my eye I sent back the grado's in exchange for the Q701s' (My Fiance' was happy as the Q701's priced lower than the grado's .... When the Q701s came I was excited, first of all packaging was cool .... and the lime green headphones looked sharp as all get out (green ... favorite color.) I have to say I'm actually a pretty large fan of the late 50's and early 60s Jazz output of Quincy Jones so the Q for Quincy was actually a selling point to me (sorry I got hit with the marketing bug on this one) .... so the Quincy recommendation on the box actually meant quite a bit to me.
On first play.... The headphones were only fractionally better than my current Sennhiesser hd485's; I was happy, just not blown away, though I knew from all the reviews these needed some "burn in time" ( which they absolutely do) Also, they do work ok without a headphone amp but they really start to shine when put through a decent headphone amp. (I'm using the O2 amp and a homemade tube headphone unit) .....
It's now been a few weeks since getting my Q701s. While they are not getting constant use .... I am using them as much as possible. They have EXPONENTIALLY improved since first listen. slowly these things have come ALIVE. I can't begin to talk about how good the sound has become. I'm a big Jazz head but I've been listening to alot of Yes and Led Zeppelin simply because the dynamics of that sort of stuff really shines in these headphones .... the bass has become perfect, enough rumble to wake you up but not enough to shake the windows, the mids and the highs are about as perfect as I have ever heard and the sound-stage on these things make you feel like your sitting in the recording studio, you can literally hear a fly sneeze on the back wall of the vocal booth while the rest of the band is playing. I have heard Zeppelin 4 maybe 1000 time in my life but the clarity of "Going to California" lent to things I have never heard. I won't even get into how good the remaster "Dark side of the moon" or "Abby road"..... it's spooky, you can practically hear the guys in the engineering booth take drags off their cigarettes.
The bad, my only complaint ( and I was warned ) these are open backed headphones, they do produce a lot of noise that can be heard by outside persons. THese would absolutely not be good for an office or train environment. While wearing these you can hear outside sounds pretty clear too .... so, if the tv is on you can hear it in the background while listening...... my spouse is "tolerating" me in the bed next to her listening .....
All that said ..... THANK YOU QUINCY AND AKG ...... these things RULE!!!!!!
